Our Team

Each team member at Ponsonby Physiotherapy has been through a rigorous evaluation process and has been hand picked for the qualities they bring to the team. On joining Ponsonby Physiotherapy, each team member commits to 60 hours of ongoing education annually, to ensure we are continually offering our clients the best & latest treatments available.

When you opt for treatment with us, you get not only the skill and experience of your individual physiotherapist, but the combined experience of the entire team, who will work together, or with external practitioners where necessary, in order to achieve a full recovery for you.

All of our physiotherapists have at least 5 years experience, most more than 15, and have resolved a myriad of client injuries and issues in that time. All of our physiotherapists are equipped and available to resolve any issues that clients present with. As all of our physiotherapists have undertaken post-graduate study, each also has an area of particular interest which can create additional benefits for clients – some of these are listed below.

Recurrent or chronic problems are a common issue for many people following sports, spinal or occupational injuries.  Pam can help you minimise this risk with her expertise in muscle balance, postural awareness retraining and trunk stability exercises.  Additionally Pam is one of the few Auckland physiotherapists trained in kinesiotaping, a new and very popular taping technique which can stimulate or inhibit muscle activity, stimulate lymphatic return and moblilise fascia, depending on the way it is applied.  Pam completed her Diploma in Manipulative Therapy in 1982 and is a founding partner of Ponsonby Physiotherapy now looking after a second generation of the Ponsonby Physiotherapy community!  Her deep understanding of chronic pain and how that affects peoples lives and mobility allows her to help clients that others have given up on.  She pioneered the original Better Backs programme at the Tepid Baths before selling that practice and continues to help people improve their ability to cope with chronic conditions and pain through knowledge and the confidence to begin moving again, through ACC funded Activity Based Programmes in our rehabilitation gym.  Her excellent relationships with local GPs and specialists helps deliver best practice care to her clients.  Her passion for sports medicine is satisfied by her support of the touch rugby competition at Cox's Bay over summer.

Having experience as an elite athlete herself (Toni represented NZ in cycling in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games) Toni has a great empathy for the injured athlete as well as the everyday pains and strains she sees.  In addition skills gained since graduation in 1997 completing the Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine from Otago University, the PPANZ Introductory Acupuncture course and commencing the Chinese Acupunture course at AUT help her to assess definitively and provide up to date treatment to ensure your recovery is as quick as is possible.  She has a keen interest in Sports Biomechanics, particularly with cycling and will combine an understanding of the biomechanics affecting your injury in combination with manual therapy and acupuncture to  improve your general well being.  She is on the executive of Auckland Branch of the Sports Medicine Association and understands effective communication with your GP and/or specialist may be key to analysing and treating your problem.

Pain and loss of mobility can range from a small irritating niggle that is affecting your golf score to constant pain preventing you from working or sleeping.  However big or small, old or new your injury or niggle is the key to quick and successful recovery lies in correct diagnosis and accurate treatment.  He believes client understanding of their problem and their motivation towards their treatment programme is also vital to  recovery.  John graduated in 1987 and has worked in London and Australia before returning to Auckland.  He worked in Titirangi and set up Vital Physiotherapy in Grey Lynn before joining Ponsonby Physiotherapy in 2007 to escape the administration and join a team of experienced physiotherapists.  John has a Masters in Manipulative Physiotherapy from the University of Queensland and the skills and philosophies gained from his time there underpin his commitment to really analysing your sports or spinal injury before deciding on a rehabilitation plan with you.  His manipulative skills combined with an understanding of biomechanics, exercise therapy and the experience gained from over 25 years in practice combine to help those who frequently have not been helped by physiotherapy before. John also has a long association with Herne Bay raquets club helping their players of all ages return to the courts, and more recently has been involved with keeping Auckland Kickboxers in action which is no mean feat!

Exercise for health and recreation is important to many of us.  So it is frustrating to have to stop because of an injury and even more frustrating to injure yourself trying to do the right thing and get fit!  Lydia has a BSc(Hons) in Physiotherapy (2003) and a BSc( Hons) in Sport Science (1997) and a passion for helping people to exercise well.  Her skills in exercise prescription, gym programme development, clinical pilates, massage and manual therapy combine to help clients recover from injury and surgery quickly and learn to prevent recurrence.  Combining these skills with advice on posture and muscle balance means her clients develop tools for life, knowing their body's potential and how to keep it well.  Clients have been thrilled with changes she has made to their gym programmes which she does following an onsite assessment at their gym.  She teaches Pilates at the clinic and can customise this to  accommodate your special requirements while recovering.

Clients presenting with respiratory problems will often not realise the role that their neck and back are playing in creating the problem. Having previously been involved in respiratory therapy and asthma education, and completed a post graduate certificate in breathing pattern disorder and rehabilitation, Anita uses her experience to teach good breathing habits and facilitate lifestyle changes.

Anita is available for breathing training, by appointment only.

Clients presenting with sports, home and work related injuries are likely to experience physical restriction and pain with their everyday activities.  Claire graduated in 1998 and has worked in private practice since, in New Zealand, England and Dubai.  Claire uses a combination of manual therapy techniques, soft tissue and deep tissue massage therapy and exercise prescription to promote muscle balance and biomechanical correction.  She utilises Pilates as part of her exercise prescription and also uses acupuncture as an adjunct to her treatments.  These techniques enhance your body's natural recovery and help you learn how to prevent further injury.
